The Gospel of John is replete with meaning, not least because of its rootedness in the Old Testament. In its description of the crucial event of Jesus’ resurrection it speaks of two angels which – for readers familiar with the Old Testament background – evoke an association with the cherubs on the Ark of the Covenant. This association can be corroborated by showing that it is possible to understand ἄγγελοι in John 20,12 as cherubs, a notion which becomes compelling when supported by arguments from the visual sphere. Furthermore, the presence of a link with the Ark of the Covenant deepens the impact of the verse within the framework of the Fourth Gospel, giving theological meaning to this verse and its context.
