«Conscience is the aboriginal Vicar of Christ»: An Introduction into Newman’s Doctrine on Conscience. Conscience is in the very center of modern human self-understanding. But what is conscience? This article begins with a presentation of Newman’s personal journey, highlighting his first conversion and his passage to the Catholic Church, in order to rediscover the authentic meaning of conscience. In a second step, it considers Newman’s thoughts on the relationship between conscience, God and the Church. Newman underlines the inter-dependence between the authority of conscience and that of the Church, both being in the service of Truth. Conscience is the advocate of Truth in our hearts.
