The Victims’ Fragile Authority. Notes on the Holocaust Survivors Exhibit in Vienna. The vandalism against the exhibition «Against Oblivion» by Luigi Toscano on Vienna’s Ringstrasse has provoked shocked reactions. The defilement of portraits of Holocaust survivors with swastikas has once again shown the fragile authority of the victims. The imperative of «not forgetting» intends to promote moral alertness to new forms of social exclusion. In the neo-Nazi milieu, this obviously encounters strong defensive reflexes. The attacks against the memorial exhibition which gives suffering a face have at the same time unleashed cultural and religious acts of solidarity, especially in the younger generation. That is a reason for hope.
