Did it Have an Effect on the Papacy, when certain Popes Came from a Religious Order? This article asks: Members of religious orders who were elected Pope and the reform the church - is there any connection? Did it have any effect on the way how certain popes were leading the church that they belonged to a certain religious order? A certain connection can be seen especially with the Benedictines of the Middle Ages. With some caution one will be able to say that among the 36 popes who came from a religious order (out of a total of 266), there were relatively many significant figures.
