Environmental Protection as a Possibility for More Subsidiarity in the Catholic Church. In contrast to the general perception of Laudato si’ as the beginning of something new, I would rather argue that ecological and sustainable engagement does (and did) exist in the Catholic Church and most other Christian denominations since several decades. The location of this engagement, however, has changed. In parallel to the 19th century development of the social Catholicism (and the encyclical Rerum novarum) the «eco Catholicism» has started on a lower level and made it way to the papal level and encyclical acknowledgement during a more than one-generation lasting process. Due to this subsidiary development, it has gained and kept local anchoring.
