The Icon: A Response to Aniconism. The text explains how images came back in the first millennium despite the biblical aniconism. It is shown that the ban on cult images at the beginning of the Decalogue does not apply to all images. The task of biblical monotheism is not to be silent about God, but to express his unique simultaneity of presence and withholding. Scripture, Israel's first medium of God, was particularly suited to this because Scripture is the medium of reference. She is never herself what she designates.
