Forgetting as a Mode of Doctrinal Development. Starting from the insight that remembering and forgetting are two sides of the same coin, the article asks to what extent the church as a community of remembering is at the same time a community of forgetting (chapter 1). While the habitual remembrance of central contents of the Christian faith is one of the tasks of the magisterium, the magisterium also makes use of forgetting as a way in which doctrinal development can take place, as is shown by the example of monogenism (chapter 2). The text is concluded by systematic-theological reflections on the place of cultural studies research, on various forms of forgetting, and on the responsibility that comes with insight into processes of forgetting (chapter 3).
