Dichtung vom göttlichen Wort. Der Hymnus «Pange lingua» des Thomas von Aquin als eucharistische Christologie in Versen. Als der wohl bekannteste Text des Thomas von Aquin eröffnet der Hymnus ‹Pange lingua› nicht nur einen privilegierten Zugang zu seiner Theologie und Spiritualität der Eucharistie. Er weist zugleich auch einen Weg zu den zentralen Begriffen seiner Theologie und Christologie. Als erstes Wort des Fronleichnamsoffiziums will er Auskunft darüber geben, wer es ist, der da unter den Gestalten von Brot und Wein gegenwärtig wird. Den Schlüssel seiner Christologie in Versen liefert Thomas das Verständnis Christi als ewiges Wort, das Fleisch geworden ist, wie es der Prolog des Johannes-Evangeliums bezeugt. Anhand seiner öffnet sich der Blick auf Person und Leben Jesu, auf seine Selbstgabe in der Eucharistie, seine Schöpferkraft, die in der Wandlung wirksam ist, und auf seine Gegenwart im Sakrament, die schließlich transparent wird auf das göttliche Leben der Dreifaltigkeit. Zugleich damit die zentralen Begriffe seiner Theologie zur Sprache.
Poetry oft the Divine Word. Thomas Aquinas’s Hymn «Pange lingua» as an Eucharistic Christology in Verse. As probably the best-known text by Thomas Aquinas, the hymn ‹Pange lingua› not only opens up privileged access to his theology and spirituality of the Eucharist. It also points the way to the central concepts of his theology and Christology. As the first word of the Office of Corpus Christi, it aims to provide information about who it is that is present under the forms of bread and wine. The key to his Christology in verse is Thomas’ understanding of Christ as the eternal Word who became flesh, as the prologue to the Gospel of John testifies. This opens up a view of the person and life of Jesus, of his self-giving in the Eucharist, of his creative power, which is effective in the consecration, and of his presence in the sacrament, which ultimately becomes transparent in the divine life of the Trinity. Within this the hymn brings up the central concepts of his theology.
