The God-Man (θεῖοϚ ἀνήρ). The meaning of a religious-historical scheme of interpretation for the understanding of Christian leadership in Late Antiquity. – Philostrat’s Apollonius as well as Antonius’ Athanasius represent qualified authoritative leaders because of their special skills. They are used with a concrete political-sociological bias by their biographers Philostrat and Athanasius: both want to instrumentalize them to promote Greek Paideia (Apollonius) and the ecclesiastical and doctrinal integration of monks (Antonius). But there is an important difference between the two persons regarding their anthropological nature: Apollonius is portrayed as a hellenistic Divine Man, Antonius as a biblical Man of God.
