Zusammenfassung / Abstract
The councils that met in Hispania from the fourth century up until the eve of the Muslim Invasion of 711 are a rich collection. The councils reveal many aspects of secular and ecclesial life. Hispania is still consistently marginalized in the majority of monographs dealing with early Christianity. The reality back then is that Hispania was hardly an isolated region. For our topic, the councils that met in Hispania, regional and national, contain many references to deacons that reveal the multi-varied roles that deacons played in society and Church. To my knowledge no systematic study has been executed on the topic of deacons as found in these councils. The objective of this contribution is to flesh out all references to deacons.
