“The Future Pope? A Curial Prediction on Cardinal Hubald of Ostia/Lucius III. (1181–1185)” – Little is known so far about Lucius III, who was elevated to the papacy as an old man after the conflict-ridden pontificate of Alexander III. (1159–1181). In light of recent research on prognostication among medieval historiographers, his ascension can be explained as the consequence of a long and successful career as a curial diplomat. For his contemporaries, especially Cardinal Boso, continuator of the Liber pontificalis, it was apparently foreseeable long before 1181 that Hubald of Ostia might succeed Alexander.
